Home Battery Backup in 2026: Sizing, Cost & Plug-in LiFePO4 Picks

On jackery.com today, a plug-in LiFePO4 home battery runs from $899 for the 2,042 Wh Explorer 2000 v2 to $3,149 for the 5,040 Wh Explorer 5000 Plus. Plugging appliances in needs no install. Feeding home circuits needs a transfer switch, which Jackery says typically costs $1,500 to $2,000 to install.[Jackery][Jackery]

Decide first: For a fridge and router through a short outage, a 2 kWh battery you plug into is the simplest choice. For 240V loads or several circuits, look at the 5 kWh Explorer 5000 Plus with a transfer switch. For multi-day outages on whole-home loads, compare a standby generator.

Fridge runtime calculator (your numbers)

Hours = (battery Wh × usable %) ÷ (fridge Wh per hour + other loads in watts). Fridge Wh per hour = EnergyGuide kWh per year × 1,000 ÷ 8,760. Starting values are examples only; usable % is an assumption, so use your unit's spec if it lists one.

How many watts does a refrigerator use in a 24-hour outage?

Every model is different, so use your own number. The FTC says the yellow EnergyGuide label on refrigerators tells you how much energy the appliance uses[FTC]; the label lists estimated yearly use in kWh. Divide by 365 to get daily use. A refrigerator rated 500 kWh a year uses about 1.37 kWh (1,370 Wh) a day, or an average of about 57 W. The compressor switches on and off, so the watts while it runs are higher than that average, and your battery's output must cover the startup.

Example: a 2,042 Wh battery with an assumed 85% usable energy gives about 1,736 Wh. Divided by 1,370 Wh a day, that is roughly 1.3 days for that fridge alone. Try your numbers in the calculator above.

How to size a home battery backup

  1. List what must run. Write down the appliances you need in an outage: refrigerator, router, lights, sump pump, well pump.
  2. Find each appliance's energy use. For a refrigerator, read the yellow EnergyGuide label, which shows estimated yearly electricity use in kWh. Divide by 365 for daily kWh. For other items, use the nameplate watts.
  3. Add up daily watt-hours. Multiply each item's watts by the hours it runs, then add the refrigerator's daily kWh times 1,000.
  4. Pick capacity with margin. Choose a battery whose capacity covers your daily total for the number of outage days you plan for, with room for inverter losses.
  5. Check output and voltage. Make sure the battery's AC output covers everything running at once, and that it has 240V if you need a well pump or central AC.
  6. Decide how to connect. Plug appliances in directly, or have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch so the battery feeds home circuits. Ask about local permits.

Jackery says its portable power stations are not recommended for medical devices, life-support equipment or other uses where a power interruption could cause injury[Jackery]. If someone at home depends on powered medical equipment, talk to the device maker and your utility.

FAQ

How much does a whole home battery backup cost?

It depends on capacity and how it connects. On jackery.com on Oct 25, 2026, the Explorer 5000 Plus with Smart Transfer Switch was $3,989, a 10 kWh kit with the switch $6,429, and a 20 kWh kit $12,139. Jackery says installing the switch typically costs $1,500 to $2,000 more. Fixed wall batteries are priced by installer quote.

How many watts does a refrigerator use?

It varies by model, so check yours. The yellow EnergyGuide label on most refrigerators shows estimated yearly electricity use in kWh. Divide by 365 for daily use: a fridge rated 500 kWh a year uses about 1.37 kWh, or 1,370 Wh, per day. The compressor cycles, so running watts are higher than that daily average.

Is there a federal tax credit for home batteries in 2026?

Not under Section 25D. The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025, so battery storage installed in 2026 does not qualify. Check your state and utility for any local battery or backup incentives.

Do I need a permit for a home battery backup?

Plugging appliances into a portable battery needs no installation. Connecting a battery to your home's circuits uses a transfer switch, which a licensed electrician should install, and many cities require an electrical permit for that work. Ask your local building department. Jackery says you can use its installer or your own certified electrician.
